Consumers practically need an MBA in Food Terminology 101 in order to understand today’s health food craze. In fact, I found myself researching the contemporary term “Food Hack” as it was a new concept to me, although I am sure actual Food Hacks are certainly not something new; more than likely, it is the slang term that is new.
Since we are discussing food terminology, I thought of yet another term in the form of an acronym that once again found me researching. There has recently been a plethora of media coverage and marketing that focuses on non-GMO meats and dairy items. In case you are wondering, GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism. Awareness of GMO’s first made its appearance in the past decade or so. It seems that livestock were being fed rations that caused unnatural accelerated growth, which obviously enhances that commodity in trade as more product can be produced in a shorter period of time. We all know the firm guideline of “What Goes In Must Come Out; in other words the GMO’s must obviously re-surface in meat and dairy products that we consume. Much research has been done that indicates that such additives may be the culprits behind burgeoning Autism, Asperger’s Disorder, and even more cases of ADHD in this country.
Now that we are aware of keeping GMO’s out of our family’s diet, enter the latest craze about going “wheatless” or gluten-free. A disease that has apparently resided in a closet for centuries has been monikered “Celiac Disease.” An extremely handy description of Celiac Disease and its causes and remedies can be readily found at http://www.webmd.com/digestive-disorders/celiac-disease/celiac-disease. Apparently gluten, which is the sticky component of all wheat products, is not easily digestible once it is in the small intestine. Those with diagnosed Celiac Disease were first thought to have an actual allergy to gluten, but that was later accelerated to an intolerance of the wheat product and even more scientifically referred to as a type of autoimmune disorder. I have personally tried to cut back on gluten after these claims hit the information superhighway just to improve my overall health, but it has been a challenging battle.
